Arrr – International Talk Like a Pirate Day, land lubber!

September 19 every year is a very special day: International Talk Like a Pirate Day! You may be asking yourself two questions, which I will endeavor to answer in the likely order that you thought them.

(Q) Why is there an International Talk Like a Pirate Day?
(A) Because there arrrr. Seriously, probably just because pirates rule and pirate lingo rules even more.

(Q) How do Cap’n Brit Cannonbait (Dana) & Cap’n Benjamin Bloodbeard (Taylor) plan to celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day??
Obviously, first by figuring out our pirate names! Other activities may include: printing out some eye patches, potentially making a canon at work, printing out some decorative workplace signs, downloading this sweet app for our ayePhones…oh and we’re going to the Yankees game tonight. Happy TLAP day matey!

Stuff White People Like

Today I was directed to check out a blog which is easily the best internet-based-time-suck since I learned about McSweeney’s Lists: Stuff White People Like. I was actually sent a link to an interview with the site’s creator (on NPR – another thing that white people like) – and told that “I’d hear myself referenced” in the interview (which I did, as they talked about metal water bottles – which is definitely something that this white person likes). But as soon as I went to the site, I found myself in more posts than I’d care to admit (ie, Stuff White People Like #75: Threatening to move to Canada).

As soon as we get up-to-date with Lost tonight (definitely something that white people like), we’ll post our pictures to Flickr (probably another likely candidate for the list) and we’ll start sharing food photos. Late.

It’s Groundhog Day!

groundhog day

Strike up the music the band has begun
The Pennsylvania Polka
Pick out your partner and join in the fun
The Pennsylvania Polka
It started in Scranton. It’s now number one
It’s bound to entertain ya
Everybody has a mania to do the polka from Pennsylvania

Groundhog Day is one of our favorite days of the year. We have a ten-year, annual tradition of watching Groundhog Day(one of our favorite movies) on Groundhog Day. Groundhog Central is our absolute favorite site for tracking what’s happening with groundhogs around the country. And if you’re looking for some other ways to celebrate, e-how has some great suggestions. Happy groundhog day!

The Story of Stuff

Last week, I had a chance to get a sneak preview of a new, short movie called The Story of Stuff. Today the Story of Stuff went live, so you can watch it too! It’s a great little movie about consumerism and the environmental and social costs of the materials economy and it takes you through the extraction, production, distribution and disposal of stuff. I know, it sounds boring – but the great thing is it’s not – it’s fast moving, explains issues clearly, and gets you thinking about consumerism. I highly recommend checking out the website (where you can watch the whole movie) or (if you’re lazy) just clicking play on the video above which will show you the first part of the movie and let you click through and see the rest of it. Enjoy!
