Caucusing rules.

For some reason, despite having majored in political science, I had never heard an explanation of how caucuses actually work. Sure, my concentration was technically in “political theory” but still, I would have expected to have learned something about this crazy system somewhere along the way (maybe between Derrida and Emma Goldman?)

Over the past few weeks, I started picking up on random allusions from reporters talking about people in Iowa “knowing how to caucus for their candidate” or “understanding what to do once they get inside” – which seemed to indicate that caucusing may be slightly more complex than primary-ing.

And it turns out that it is: caucusing in Iowa is completely different (at least in terms of how the Democratic side picks their candidates), and totally more awesome. New York Times had a great illustration which I have stolen and am pasting below. Enjoy!
